Fish Oil Pills?
Studies are popping up left and right showing the beni's of fish and Fish Oil. Some studies use fish and some use supplements. All of these contain the Omega 3 and Omega 6 Fatty Acids. The important thing to consider with
supplementation is to do your home work and find a good quality product.
If at all possible you should eat fish up to three times per week. Make sure it is not farm raised. The recommendation is 1 gram of Omega 3's preferably from fish per day. This is a tall order as you would have to consume up to 12 oz of fish per day. Most people can not and will not eat that much fish. Supplementation is a valid way to get the needed Omega's into your diet. Shoot for 1 gram a day of Omega 3.
As with any product improper use can be harmful. Taking large amounts of Fish oil could suppress the immune system. You should stay within the AHA recommended one gram per day if supplementing with Fish OilOmega 3. Keep in mind that eating fish is the way to as it contains other beneficial nutrients.
A comparison test completed recently by Consumer Reports found that topselling Fish Oil products even the least expensive were virtually contaminant free and contained the labeled dose. Also there was no detectable levels of mercury reported. This however does not imply that all future batches will be ok. Again do your research.
In summary it is always best to eat naturally occurring foods. Supplementation is sometimes necessary when those foods are not easily acquired or they do not contain the level of nutrition needed to sustain optimal health.
